The Kavli Prize announcement

The names of the 2010 Kavli Prize Laureates in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience will be announced by the President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Nils Chr. Stenseth, on 3 June at 3 pm in Oslo, Norway. The announcement will be transmitted live to the World Science Festival, New York where it will be part of the opening event.

After the official announcement the chairmen of the three prize committees will give short presentations of the prize winners and their work. This will be followed by a popular science presentation by Professor Jim Al-Khalili. The Norwegian Minister of Higher Education and Research, Tora Aasland, will close this session by congratulating the prize winners.

The Kavli Prize announcement in Oslo will be hosted by Professor Jim Jim Al-Khalili. Elisabeth Vargas from ABC News will be the moderator in New York.

The second part of this event will consist of a panel discussion with the chairmen of the Kavli Prize committees which will be chaired by Jim Al-Khalili. The committee chairs are:

Jim Al-Khalili is Professor of Physics, Professor of Public Engagement in Science, and EPSRC Senior Media Fellow at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. He is the author of several popular science books and appears regularly on radio and television. His honors include the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Science Communication.  His extensive work includes the recently broadcast BBC documentary, "The Secret Life of Chaos."

Award ceremony in September

The Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience will be presented to the Laureates by His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony at Oslo Concert Hall on 7 September. This will be followed by a banquet in honor of the Kavli Prize Laureates at Oslo City Hall hosted by the Norwegian Government.

During the Kavli Prize week - September 6-9, 2010 - events will include prize lectures by the Laureates, science symposia, and public lectures in Oslo, Trondheim and Tromsø. The Kavli Prize Science Forum will be held on the 6th of September. Ten global leaders critical in shaping science policy in the US, Europe and Asia will convene to discuss "The Role of International Cooperation in Science".

The Kavli Prize is awarded every two years by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The Kavli Prize consists of USD 1,000,000 in each scientific field. The Laureates also receive a scroll and a gold medal.
