Professor Helge Holden  er valgt til ny styreleder for Abelfondet for perioden 2010 - 2014. Han overtar etter professor Ragnar Winther som har ledet Abelstyret de siste seks årene.

Kavliprisen 2010

Historiens andre Kavliprisutdeling finner sted 7. september i Oslo Konserthus, og H. M. Kongen vil dele ut Kavliprisen i astrofysikk, nanovitenskap og nevrovitenskap til de åtte vinnerne. Forestillingen i Konserthuset vil bli ledet av Åse Kleveland, i samspill med flere musikalske artistbidrag.

EIGHT scientists whose discoveries have dramatically expanded human understanding in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience have been recognised with the award of the million-dollar Kavli Prizes.

The Kavli Prize

His Majesty King Harald will present the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience to the eight laureates from US, Germany and UK at a gala performance in Oslo Concert Hall on the 7th of September. The prize winners will receive a gold medal, a scroll and a share of the one million US dollars awarded in each of the scientific fields. Åse Kleveland, artist and former Minister of Culture, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Fred Kavli and Tora Aasland, the Minister of Research and Higher Education will be among the many prominent guests at the gala, where several artists will be performing.

Preses i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, Nils Chr. Stenseth, kunngjorde i en direktesending som ble tv-overført  til åpningen av World Science Festival i New York 3. juni navnene på de åtte fremagende forskerne innen astrofysikk, nanovitenskap og nevrovitenskap som får årets Kavlipriser. Kavliprisen i astrofysikk går til Jerry Nelson, Ray Wilson og Roger Angel. Donald M. Eigler og Nadrian Seeman deler Kavliprisen i nanovitenskap, mens Kavliprisen i nevrovitenskap tildeles Thomas Südhof, Richard Scheller og James Rothman. Kong Harald vil overrekke prisene under en seremoni i Oslo konserthus 7. september.

The Kavli Prize 2010

The names of the 2010 Kavli Prize Laureates in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience will be announced by the President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Nils Chr. Stenseth, on 3 June at 3 pm in Oslo, Norway. The announcement will be transmitted live to the World Science Festival, New York where it will be part of the opening event.

After the official announcement the chairmen of the three prize committees will give short presentations of the prize winners and their work. This will be followed by a popular science presentation by Professor Jim Al-Khalili. The Norwegian Minister of Higher Education and Research, Tora Aasland, will close this session by congratulating the prize winners.

Preses i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, Nils Chr. Stenseth, vil kunngjøre navnene på vinnerne av Kavliprisen i astrofysikk, nanovitenskap og nevrovitenskap på Akademiet torsdag 3. juni kl. 15.00. Etter den offisielle kunngjøringen vil lederne av de tre internasjonale priskomiteene begrunne tildelingene. Deretter blir det en populærvitenskapelig presentasjon av prisvinnernes arbeid ved Jim Al-Khalili. Avslutningsvis vil statsråd Tora Aasland gratulere prisvinnerne.

John Torrence Tate received the Abel Prize from HM King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, Tuesday 25 May. The Abel Laureate was received in audience at the Royal Palace earlier the same day. His Majesty King Harald was also present at the banquet at Akershus Castle in honour of this year's Abel Laureate. Tora Aasland, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, was the host for the banquet. Sir Michael Atiyah, the 2004 Abel Laureate, was the main speaker of the evening.

Hans Majestet Kong Harald overrakte Abelprisen til John Torrence Tate under en høytidelig seremoni i et fullsatt Gamle Logen i Oslo tirsdag 25. mai. Tidligere på dagen hadde årets Abelprisvinner blitt mottatt i audiens på Slottet. Kongen var også til stede ved Regjeringens bankett på Akershus slott til ære for årets Abelprisvinner. Abel Prize award ceremony 2010

The American mathematician John Torrence Tate, University of Texas at Austin, will receive the 2010 Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, 25 May. The Abel Prize carries a cash award of NOK 6,000,000 (close to € 730,000 or US$ 1 mill.) is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Det var en varm og sommerlig hovedstad som møtte Abelprisvinner John Torrence Tate da han ankom Oslo denne uken. Han ble tatt imot på Gardermoen av Vitenskapsakademiets generalsekretær Øivind Andersen. På Hotel Continental var den røde løperen rullet ut og Abelsuiten gjort klar for den celebre gjesten.

12 nye medlemmer har blitt innvalgt i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi. De nye medlemmene ble presentert og mottok dipilom på Akademiets årsmøte 3. mai.

Vinnerne av Fridtjof Nansens belønning for fremragende forskning innen realfag og medisin og innen samfunnsfag og humaniora, samt Fridtjof Nansens belønning for yngre forskere  er offentliggjort.
